A Portrait of Generosity

Jack recently turned nine years old. In honor of his birthday, he and his family took part in a “9 acts of kindness” challenge. As one of his acts, Jack generously gave some of his birthday money toward buying birthday gifts for our youth in foster care. It was a selfless action that touched a lot of our hearts, so we did a little bragging about him on our Facebook page

After our post, a local Kansas City radio station, KC 102.1, caught wind and chose to honor Jack as their Kind Kid of the Month in partnership with Commerce Bank. They coordinated with his school to surprise him during class with donuts, a future pizza party and a cash prize. But the story doesn’t stop there. Jack took a sizable chunk of the money he received and donated it to support even more of our children and families.

“I thought that some kids need a better life,” Jack explained, “And I felt so happy that other kids could have a special birthday.”

“It was a full-circle moment,” added Tara, Jack’s mother. “We’ve been so blessed to have four healthy kids who are all doing well. It made sense to us.”

Even at age nine, Jack has internalized that giving of ourselves is important — not just for those receiving the gift, but for the givers as well. We’re honored to receive the generosity of this young man and are grateful for donors of all ages who chose to improve the safety and health of the community around them. You, too, can follow Jack’s example, by making a donation to the program of your choice.
