5 Ways YOU Can Support Foster Families

5 Ways YOU Can Support Foster Families

Being a foster parent is important, difficult work. Those who open their homes and hearts to children in state custody are not superhuman and need a network of support alongside them. Even if you’re not yet a foster parent, you can support those on the front lines of foster care. Here are five ways that you can be a vital part of the foster care community.

  1. Be You!
However you came to this blog post, you’re probably a person who shares our desire to provide a positive impact in the lives of children, youth and families. While there are specific ways to get involved (highlighted below), you can make a big difference by bringing your individuality to the table. If you cut and style hair, you can invite foster families and kids to come in for discounted cuts. If you’re capable in the kitchen, you can cook dinners for families. There are many ways you can help, so think about your unique skillset and then reach out and jump in!
  1. Advocate for Children
CASA, which stands for “Court Appointed Special Advocates”, is a national organization that connects volunteers with children who need an adult presence as they move from home to home. Judges appoint CASA volunteers to watch over a foster child’s case and ensure they don’t get lost in the system. Also, getting to know children in foster care directly is a great way to know how to advocate on their behalf. Our mentorship program pairs adults with children in our services who have requested a mentor.
  1. Prove Respite Care
Respite is an essential part of the foster care model. Whether it’s for an afternoon, overnight or a weekend, respite families provide short-term care for children so foster parents can get some much needed rest and relaxation. Additionally, if you are considering fostering yourself, this is an awesome way to sharpen your own skills and get an introduction into the world of fostering.
  1. Donate
From mattresses to movie tickets, your donation will reduce barriers and have a positive impact on foster families. Children in the state custody often lack basic resources. You can ease the burden of transitioning to a new home by helping ensure that they have new, clean clothes and luggage to carry them in. Or, you can help a future foster family prepare for their placement by donating new bedding, school supplies, etc. We are always in need of items on our Wish List, and The Luggage Company is an awesome, Kansas City organization.
  1. Spread the Word
We’re always looking for new ways to connect to the community. Whether you organize a Lunch & Learn at your workplace, meet with a small group at your church or have a regular Saturday golf outing, we’d love for you to help us spread the word! The more individuals that understand the need for foster care and how they can get involved, the more children who will have loving homes where they can heal from trauma. If you would like to have one of our foster care specialists make a presentation to a group you are involved in, contact Forrest McCurren at forrest.mccurren@cornerstonesofcare.org.

There are many ways, both large and small to get involved and support our foster families. You can even begin by signing up for our advocacy newsletter and advocating for laws that protect and strengthen children and families.
