Partnering with Families and Celebrating Change

We know for a child to thrive, the family unit must be safe and secure at home. We are excited to be the first organization to bring Solution-Based Casework® (SBC) to Missouri. SBC is an evidence-based preventative model specifically designed to:

  • Reduce lengths of stay for youth in residential treatment, and
  • Reduce re-entries of children into state custody by increasing domestic permanency.

Supported by our ideology of trauma-informed care, the model focuses on full-family health. The SBC model provides practitioners with the skills and tools necessary to assist families in avoiding potentially harmful behaviors by building healthy lifestyle skills to manage everyday challenges, such as stress.

SBC is an assessment, case planning and casework approach that helps our team of social workers, therapists and behavioral health specialists focus on the entire family’s well-being. Its three core elements are:

  1. To create a partnership based on program consensus in a language the family understands;
  2. To focus that partnership on the patterns of everyday family life that are directly related to threats to safety; and
  3. To target solutions specific to prevention skills needed to create safety and reduce risk in those family situations.

By assessing familial patterns and interactions, practitioners will be able to identify the everyday challenges families’ experience that could jeopardize child safety. Families will then focus in on those specific everyday challenges to develop solution-based action plans for the whole family, as well as individual family members. Individual and family level action plans provide specific prevention, interruption, and escape skills that will be practiced and documented by the family and individuals. By integrating both a problem- and solution-focused approach, the child’s unique needs are met in a nurturing environment while the family’s confidence in their own capabilities is restored.

Thanks to grants from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City and the Hall Family Foundation, our direct-care staff will soon implement Solution-Based Casework®. In the first two years, foster care case management, intensive in-home services, family reunification and our residential treatment programs will implement the framework.
