The spirit of giving is on full display at Cornerstones of Care year-round! Each month, volunteers and donors alike commit to changing the lives of children and families by keeping our fundraising events running smoothly, leading projects on our main campuses, and donating much needed in-kind items. From sprucing up outdoor spaces to allow our children and families to play and learn together to providing items to make the season special for the children and families we serve, we couldn't do it without our amazing supporters!

Educating Young Minds

Be the Change Volunteers (BTCV), a nonprofit that works to improve education opportunities worldwide, recently presented the day treatment school on our Gillis Campus with close to 1,000 books! This is particularly cool because BTCV primarily operates in developing-world countries, serving remote communities, and we were their only American project. We are honored to receive this generous donation. Thank you, BTCV, for educating young minds!

Partnering for Healthy Hearts

Athletic Testing Solutions conducted free heart screenings for our youth in residential care. The event was made possible by funding from Strive for Life and the Jordan Robert Mann Foundation. Through the partnership, 57 youth were screened for congenital heart problems and abnormalities that don’t show up during a regular checkup or sports physical. Thank you for helping keep our children healthy!

Thank You, Alex & Elizabeth Smith!

For years, Alex and Elizabeth Smith have been dedicated to helping foster care youth achieve their academic dreams. Together, they have been a life-changing partner for many young people in our YES (Youth Educational Success) program. Recognizing that these youth need a flexible, resilient and personalized path to post-secondary education, they have spent time mentoring, hosting graduation and holiday events, and providing encouragement and inspiration to these young people who have often felt forgotten or dismissed.

Thank you for all you have done in Kansas City. We are going to miss you!

SKCC Recognizes Us for Making an Impact

The South Kansas City Chamber of Commerce recognizes organizations, companies and volunteers who positively impact South Kansas City at their annual SKCC Dinner/Community Impact Awards. We are honored to be a 2018 award recipient for the services we provide on our Ozanam Campus such as our therapeutic day treatment school, horticultural therapy program and more. Board member Helen Jorski and Cornerstones of Care CEO Denise Cross were present at the dinner to accept the distinguished award. Thank you for your support and recognition!

Grainger Foundation Gifts $5,000 to Cornerstones of Care

Grainger’s Culture of Service Comes to Life

Grainger’s long-time culture of service is making its mark at our Gillis Campus School. Thanks to a gift of $5,000 from the Grainger Foundation, we are well on our way to replacing the floors at the Gillis Campus School to make it a more sustainable and trauma-informed environment for many years to come. Thank you for your support, and our students can’t wait to welcome you back once the project is complete!

NASB visits Ozanam Campus

NASB Impact Goes Beyond One Campus

Earlier in the year, NASB gifted $80,000 to help benefit the residential treatment program at our Gillis Campus, as well as the community-based therapeutic foster care program, and now their caring and giving spirit continues to impact another one of our campus locations. Last week, our friends from NASB met at our Ozanam Campus to provide another generous gift of $20,000 and tour our South Kansas City location. Because of NASB’s support, we’ll be able to make a lot of progress on some much-needed projects on the Ozanam Campus! The kids and staff thank you!

Blair's Foster Socks Keeps Our Youth's Toes Toasty Warm

We recently shared on social media that we were in need of socks of all sizes for the youth in our care. Blair's Foster Socks went above and beyond to help us meet that need. President Michele Shanahan-DeMoss saw our post, rallied her team, and delivered five tubs full of socks — over 1,000 pairs for our youth! We are so thankful for the support of this wonderful organization.

In addition to her support through Blair's Foster Socks, Michele has visited our campuses in the past through her involvement with Gift of Life. Our students enjoy hearing her talk about organ donation, personal safety and how we all can be everyday heroes. Her inspirational message reminds us that we can all do something — big or small — to help others around us!

Centralized Supply Chain Services Creates Memories with Our Youth

Centralized Supply Chain Services (CSCS) has been a long-time supporter of Cornerstones of Care. Every year, they work directly with our youth on a special art project that is featured at our annual gala. This year, our children and the dedicated volunteers from CSCS made beautiful coaster sets and a large canvas painting. The children can't wait for you to see their work! Please join us at our Cornerstones of Care Gala on Saturday, November 18, to check out these projects for yourself! Thank you to CSCS for your continued support and dedication to children and families! We could not have had this experience without you.

Swiss Re Dedicates Time, Talent & Funds

We are honored that Swiss Re has chosen to benefit our Cornerstones of Care – Ozanam Campus in an official capacity as their Charity of The Year in 2017! Recently, we welcomed approximately 25 volunteers from this company in April to help with a variety of landscaping and beautification projects. Employees even held a fundraising drive during the first week of May that included a silent auction and fund-a-need to benefit our children and families. Their generosity is overwhelming and incredibly appreciated! Thank you to Swiss Re – and all of our amazing supporters! Your dedication to the children and families of Cornerstones of Care is important to us, and especially to those we serve. Each and every one of YOU make it possible for us to bring hope and healing to those who need it most.

NASB Surprises Us with $80,000

We are so grateful for the continued partnership with NASB! Recently, NASB gifted $80,000 to help benefit the residential treatment program at our Gillis Campus, as well as provide support for more treatment foster care homes in our community. As the need for more treatment foster care homes continues to increase, we know that this gift will certainly go a long way in providing a safe and caring environment for the youth in our neighborhoods!

Burns & McDonnell Creates New Opportunities for Our Kids

In addition to being a 2017 Spirit Award recipient, Burns & McDonnell has adopted Cornerstones of Care as its 2017 Charity of the Year. On top of its financial support of $135,000, associates gave their time and talent to three of our campuses to help maintain current facilities and to create new opportunities for our kids. At our Ozanam Campus, more than 80 associates recently helped fence an area that will become an orchard and garden, rehabbed picnic tables and mulched gardens. At our Gillis Campus, they addressed much-needed landscaping work. And at our Spofford Campus, associates created a new nature trail for our kiddos. Thank you Burns & McDonnell! Your commitment to the children and families of Cornerstones of Care is amazing and so very, very appreciated!

If you are interested in learning more about becoming an official partner or getting involved in any way, please contact Sara Gardner at sara.gardner@cornerstonesofcare.org.

400 Guests Celebrate Alex & Elizabeth Smith and Burns & McDonnell

In keeping with its namesake, volunteer and donor spirit was on full display at the recent 36th Annual Spirit Awards held on April 22. The evening welcomed to The Grand Ballroom at the Kansas City Convention Center more than 400 guests committed to changing the lives of children and families served by Cornerstones of Care – and at evening’s end, raised more than $219,000 to help fund the organization’s mission. Highlighting the evening was recognition of Alex & Elizabeth Smith and Burns & McDonnell as this year’s Spirit Award recipients, joining a prestigious and impactful list of Kansas Citians who have been recognized previously for their positive impact upon our communities. Serving as Honorary Chair for this year’s event were Don & Shea Walsworth. During remarks, Shea captured the spirit of the event eloquently when she invited guests to explore the possibilities of becoming more involved with Cornerstones of Care, “Let tonight serve as an inspiration and catalyst to share your time and talents.” A special thank you to all donors, guests, and volunteers who shared their spirit at this year’s Spirit Awards!
