Shoppers can purchase their petunias, peppers, and parsley plants at the Thyme for Kids Plant Sale at the Ozanam Campus greenhouse on April 26 and 27. Proceeds from the two-day annual event go to Build Trybe Seed to Plate and horticulture programming at the Ozanam Campus, providing youth the opportunity to partner with peers to plant, grow, and sell a wide variety of plants.
Expressive Therapist Megan Sperry leads the planning and execution of the plant sale and helped us connect with *Elijah, a ninth-grader at the Ozanam Day Treatment School about what attendees can expect.
How have you been helping to prepare things for the Plant Sale?
We have been putting plants in pots, like bigger pots, starting plants from seed. We’ve watered the plants and organized the plants to where they are supposed to be.
What plants can people buy at the Plant Sale?
There’s a lot of plants! Herbs, geraniums, perennials, annuals, tomatoes, and peppers, and lots of hanging baskets.
Which plants are your favorite and why?
The plants I like are herbs. Especially rosemary. Rosemary has a strong scent when you touch the leaves.
What will your job be on the day of the event?
What I would be doing is helping people pick out plants and help customers carry plants to their cars.
What is something new that you’ve learned about growing plants this year?
I’ve learned there are so many species of plants. And I’ve learned about what they are used for and what kind of light or water they prefer.
What are you most looking forward to about the Plant Sale?
Well, I’m most looking forward to seeing a lot of people and them buying plants from us.
Why do you think people should buy their plants at the Thyme for Kids Plant Sale?
It benefits our program. We’ve been working really hard since January to prepare for the sale. Plants can help in a lot of ways. Plants give me a sense of joy.
