What is outpatient counseling?
Our mental health is important in every stage of life, from childhood to adolescence to adulthood. It affects how we think, feel, act, handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.
Major life events, traumatic experiences, and even stress can significantly impact our ability to successfully function at seemingly easy daily tasks. If you, a child, or a family member have been feeling overwhelmed, then outpatient counseling may be for you. Outpatient counseling can help children, adults, and families address the effects of trauma, improve stress management skills, and resolve problematic behaviors and relationship issues.
Counseling helps identify triggers and patterns and teaches new skills to process current and past circumstances. With counseling, children, adults, and families experience personal growth and change to have happier, more productive lives. Certified in trauma-informed care, we offer therapeutic services in an atmosphere of acceptance to promote your well-being. We’ll match you with knowledgeable and caring therapists who can help with:
- Abuse/Neglect
- Addiction
- Adoption
- Anxiety
- Conflict Resolution
- Co-Parenting Challenges
- Depression
- Family Relationship Struggles
- Grief/Loss
- Identity Questions
- Marital Discord
- Self-Esteem
- Stress
- Substance Abuse
We noticed signs with Kayla immediately. Thanks to the Outpatient Therapy Program, we have been able to successfully address the problems and continue with our day-to-day activities.”

What to expect from counseling
Beginning counseling is a big step toward being the healthiest version of yourself, no matter what challenges you may be facing. And while it does produce positive results, it is not magic. It requires commitment and patience. So what can you expect?
- You will be in a safe space where you can let your guard down and be yourself.
- You will be respected and heard.
- You will get to know yourself better.
- Sometimes you may feel uncomfortable, but don’t give up—it’s part of the process.
Who is eligible?
Anyone of any age in the Kansas City and St. Louis metro areas is eligible for our services. For those outside the metro areas, teletherapy may also be an option.
While we accept some private insurance and sometimes accept Medicaid, we are also sensitive to financial stress. That’s why we offer a variety of payment options. Some locations offer a sliding-scale fee based on your gross yearly income, and others offer various funding options depending on the service. In addition, many of our programs receive grant funding that covers funding for services for individuals and families under certain conditions. Even if you are uninsured, we may be able to assist you.
Foster and Adoptive Care Coalition
Cornerstones of Care and the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition in the St. Louis region partner to address the unique needs of foster & adoptive families. Foster/adoptive families often face unique challenges due to emotional, mental, or physical trauma experienced by children in their care. The majority of families receive excellent support from existing programs and partnerships in the St. Louis community. A small percentage of families need additional, more intensive services. The Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition identifies these families and connects them to Cornerstones of Care for outpatient counseling with an emphasis on trauma, attachment, and adoption.
