Water Safety Ensures Summer Fun for All

This summer, many families will look to cool off and have fun at the pool. Foster parents must adhere to Missouri or Kansas regulations regarding water safety, particularly for home swimming pools.

Missouri and Kansas regulations differ but have the same intent: to ensure that children are safe around water. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 4 and the second leading cause of death for children 5 to14. Kansas and Missouri regulations for foster family water safety cover hot tubs, wading pools, above-ground pools, and in-ground pools.

The primary rule for foster parents is to ensure that an adult caregiver is in attendance and directly supervising children when they are in the pool. Both states also require that pools and hot tubs are fenced and have a bolt lock or comparable gate mechanism to deter small children from entering the water unsupervised.

Remaining vigilant while foster children are around water isn’t just good common sense, but a requirement. Here are a few helpful recommendations for foster parents:

  • Swimming Lessons: Enroll children in age-appropriate swimming lessons to build their confidence and skills.
  • CPR Certification: Foster parents are required to become CPR certified. In emergencies, quick action can save lives.
  • Establish Rules: Set clear rules for water play, such as no running near the pool, no diving in shallow areas, and always asking permission before entering the water.
  • Secure Pool Areas: Ensure gates are self-closing and self-latching, and that locks are out of reach of children.

Be sure to review the regulations in Missouri or Kansas. Remember, drowning can happen in a matter of seconds and may happen without splashing or warning. Follow the water safety rules to ensure a fun and happy summer.
