Haren Companies, ICM Named to Lead Education Campus Construction

Project will turn O’Hara High School Building into Cornerstones of Care Learning Academy beginning in the 2026-27 School Year

Gillis Campus to Close at the end of the year

Preparing for the beginning of the 2026-27 school year, Cornerstones of Care today announced that is has selected the Haren Companies as the general contractor for renovations to its Education Campus and Integrity Capital Management (ICM) as the project manager.

The Education Campus renovation will update the vacant Archbishop O’Hara High School into the Cornerstones of Care Learning Academy, a K-12 day-treatment school. As part of this process, Cornerstones of Care is sunsetting the Gillis Campus when its lease runs out at the end of the year. Aging buildings and deferred maintenance costs led to the decision to move.

In addition to the Learning Academy, the Education Campus will house Build Trybe’s workforce development program, the Behavioral Intervention Support Team (BIST), which provides professional training to support behavioral challenged youth in the classroom, and the Collaborative Learning and Training program.

“(Property owner) Blue Ocean has done an outstanding job with fundamental upgrades, and now we will begin work on making the space uniquely our own,” said Chief Administrative Officer Sarah Scharinger.

Renovation work is expected to begin in mid-March and will transform the former high school space into a day treatment school with key clinical areas, such as therapy rooms, to provide trauma-informed care to the roughly 110 students. Early projects include renovating the kitchen to provide breakfast and lunch to students and enlarging smaller classrooms to provide additional space. The Education Center will include a Resource Center to provide food, clothing, and other items to support students and youth in our care.

The Haren Companies have worked on numerous local projects, ranging from office retail to faith-based spaces, with a company commitment to support organizations that aid children and families. Haren Companies Manager Chuck Haren believes the Cornerstones of Care’s values and history align with the type of projects his company undertakes.

“Historically, my dad and grandad worked on buildings on the Ozanam Campus,” Haren said. “For me personally, it’s an awesome way to walk in my dad and grandad’s footsteps.”

Kansas City-based ICM is a real estate investment and management company with a portfolio of non-profit organizations. ICM will provide project management as part of construction and will serve as property management for the Education Center once construction is complete.

With the opening of the Learning Academy for the upcoming school year, Cornerstones of Care will close its day treatment schools at the Gillis and Ozanam campuses. Team members will exit the office space at the Gillis Campus when its lease ends in December, sunsetting one of Cornerstones of Care’s longtime physical spaces. Cornerstones of Care’s headquarters will move to the Ozanam Campus.

In addition to the school renovations, the construction team will develop office space and create a training space and studio for Cornerstones of Care’s Collaborative Learning and Training team. Build Trybe’s Culinary cohort will have a training kitchen to provide marketable job skills to youth in the program.

For Scharinger, the ongoing process to prepare the building for the 2026 fall school year has included navigating stakeholder needs and managing competing priorities all in negotiating with the team of Haren Companies, ICM, and architect Focal Design Studio to make the Cornerstones of Care Education Center a reality.

“Throughout managing the complexities, it’s deeply rewarding to know the education campus will strengthen the services we provide to children and families,” Sarah said. “Creating the best possible infrastructure, both physical and organizational, has been essential, and I’m proud of the foundation we’re creating for the future.”
